Do you provide some kind of food (doughnuts, sandwiches) and drinks to your movers? We never did but the last time we moved here in Hawaii the movers seemed very annoyed and even asked us for food and water (which we didn't have).

Coincidentally (I think not) alot of our furniture was damaged during that move.
I told my husband that next time we are providing food and drinks. I see it as a kind of "insurance policy". A small price to pay to keep them from being mad and careless.
ajtrud – I agree and so does my husband but the reality is that the insurance doesn't pay replacement cost..they deduct for age and wear even if the item was brand new. Unfortunately, I am more than familiar with making claims.

We have reported three moving companies to transportation in the past (once in HI, once in NC and once in IL). We were told all three times that the movers might be put on a one or two week restriction but that they never lose their contracts. We also complained to the moving companies and got not satisfaction. I even reported the IL company to the Better Business Bureau. They never did make restitution, instead they let the bad report stay on their record.

I think the moving companies with government contracts know that they are relatively safe from losing their jobs.

It's to the point that I will resort to kissing a little **** in order to keep my things from being broken.

I am moving into a new apartment and am going to paint the walls. For my bedroom, I have a queen sized bed that is impossible for me to move once the movers take it in but I don't have any time to paint before hand. Do you think it will move if I put those sliders under the bed or do those only work for smaller furniture like tables? Any suggestions?

I want my stuff in a small studio moved. They include mattress/box and a couple of small furniture from IKEA.

Moving is 210 miles, city to city.

What is the best mover there for this kind of moving?

As a college student, I have moved 8 times in the past 4 years. It seems I am now staring down the barrel of yet another move this August and I am just DONE hauling furniture around, trying to make it fit in the stupid van, getting it up and down the stairs, etc. So I think I want to save my money and hire a couple movers – probably not the professional variety, but maybe some buff high schoolers or other people who need a little extra cash.

My questions are:

1. Where do I find these people?
2. How do I know they're not going to run off with my sofa?
3. How much should I pay them? Hourly? A flat $25 + pizza and beer (if they're of age) or soda (if they're not)? More?
4. When should I start looking?

Any other tips and tricks would be appreciated…

May be moving, not sure. Trying to plan ahead re which items would be too heavy and costly to move, what to take, and what to get rid of or sell.

Does anyone know what in general the movers charge per pound? It would be from AZ to NC. Thinking the fridge, w/d, the adjustable bed, and the trundle bed may be better to sell or donate. They were kind of expensive, but are those things just too heavy?

Some furniture we already know we are not taking and some we definitely will. Nothing antique or irreplaceable, or highly expensive, but some decent pieces.

And we have lots of books and music, which we will thin out, but want to take most of that b/c it is hard to replace. Is it realistic to take these?

Thanks in advance for any insights. Not yet ready, obviously, to call the companies and figure out who would be best. The last time I moved any distance, everything fit it the car. :)

This is a small company and talking to the manager won't really help, considering he was one of the movers. They damaged my old house (doors and floors) and will be arriving tomorrow. They asked for an unreasonably large tip and will probably be angry that they aren't receiving it, considering we did most of the work when loading all the things. Now I'm worried that they'll be careless with everything and do a lot of damage and I won't be able to do anything about it. Tomorrow we're unloading everything. Is there any way I can make sure they won't ruin the new house or furniture any more ? What can I do if they do damage it?
ANY tips would be appreciated on how to deal with these people.
Is it too late to fire them if they're already here with everything in the truck? Sorry I'm still young.
